To be married in St Mary’s Church normally one or both of the couple need to resident within the parish boundaries (see map below of boundaries). However, there might be other ‘Qualifying Connections’ that allow people to be married in the church. That is if either person:

  • was baptised in the parish. (This does not apply where the baptism formed part of a combined service of baptism or confirmation); or
  • had his or her confirmation entered in a church register book of a church or chapel in the parish; or
  • has at any time had his or her usual place of residence in the parish for at least 6 months; or
  • has at any time habitually attended public worship in the parish for at least 6 months;

or

  • a Parent of that person has at any time during that person’s lifetime:
    had his or her usual place of residence in the parish for at least 6 months; or
    habitually attended public worship in the parish for at least 6 months;

or

  • a Parent or Grandparent of that person was married in the parish.
    In this guidance, a person seeking to establish a Qualifying Connection with a parish
    and to marry under the Measure on that basis is described as the “Applicant”.

PLEASE NOTE: St Mary’s does marry first time divorcees, but only after two years from receiving their ‘Decree Absolute’. Please bring this to first meeting.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: We only book weddings up to 24 months in advance. Also note that the first three Saturdays in August are not available for weddings.

Banns
If you live outside our parish but have a ‘qualifying connection’  then you will need to have banns read in your own local Parish church as well as St Marys. It is your responsibility to action any banns other than those St Marys will read for you – the wedding cannot legally go ahead without this banns certificate from your local parish church. Here is more information about banns click here . Please talk to us if you need further help.
